Fostering an Inclusive Community

The Pozez JCC is committed to inclusion; striving to making programming accessible to all and practicing acceptance for people from all backgrounds and identities. This commitment is actualized through a number of programs, such as our annual ReelAbilities Film Festival-Greater Washington, a celebration of the artistic expressions of people with disabilities; Camp Achva, which is based on Jewish values and welcomes children of all identities; Camp Kesher for neurodiverse teens and adults; and Sunrise Day Camp-Greater Washington which brings joy to children with cancer and their siblings.

Complimenting these programs is our Inclusion and Disability Services Program which features social skills classes and adapted sports tailored for neurodiverse youth and those living with disabilities.

“The JCC programming has given my daughter, Sofia, the confidence to communicate her needs and create relationships with her peers,” said Melissa Napoli, whose daughter has been attending social skills classes for more than a decade.

The relationships formed in these classes are further fostered through our Going Places! program – a monthly social club where neurodiverse teens and adults socialize during activities like bowling and mini golfing.

“I have gained confidence, learned how to approach new people, and discovered I can enjoy communicating with them,” said participant Valerie Maizel.

Cultivating an Inclusive Environment for All

We are proud that the Pozez JCC is a warm and welcoming community which celebrates diversity, inclusion, and belonging – and honors the gifts and strengths that we each possess.

Our Inclusion and Disabilities Services program is committed to building community through activities designed to develop physical and social skills for individuals with disabilities such as: Educational workshops and special events, programs and classes, resources, summer camp, and more.

To ensure all participants have the level of support needed for success, the program features small participant-staff ratios and offerings such as social groups, recreation programs, and much more!

Inspiring New Perspectives Through Film and Art

Since 2007, the Pozez JCC's ReelAbilities Film Festival: Greater Washington is dedicated to promoting awareness and appreciation of the lives, stories and artistic expressions of people with disabilities. Each year, this dynamic festival, powered by the Pozez JCC, presents both domestic and international award-winning films paired with interactive programming that gives us a new perspective and highlights the vibrant personalities, realities, and extraordinary abilities of people.

Through film, art, and discussion, ReelAbilities Film Festival brings together the community to explore, embrace, and celebrate the diversity of our shared human experience in venues throughout the region and online. Community support is crucial and allows the festival to be offered at no cost to the audience, continuing the mission of increasing accessibility and promoting awareness.

Ensuring a Safe and Welcoming Space for All

Embracing and honoring diversity is fundamental to our mission at the Pozez JCC and each of our programmatic areas.

At Camp Achva, we aim to provide fun summer camp experiences that foster personal growth based on Jewish values for all children, regardless of their background, identity, abilities, or differences. As an inclusive camp, we set aside time to get to know each camper individually and work with them and their families to ensure a successful summer for all, within unique definitions of success.

Completing the Keshet Cohort, Camp Achva is deemed an LGBTQ Safe Zone.
