Join us for a fascinating author talk with Louise Branson, former war and foreign correspondent for the London Sunday Times, former USA Today editorial writer, and co-author or three books.
“The Inconvenient Journalist” is a gripping memoir about famed 1980s Washington Post Moscow correspondent Dusko Doder. Branson, his wife and journalistic partner, completed it after illness prevented him from doing so. He died in 2024.
This timely and compelling discussion will appeal to anyone interested in journalism, the Cold War, the Soviet Union, present-day Russia, and the importance of freedom of the press.
The book centers on a pivotal moment in Doder’s career when his reporting on Soviet leader Yuri Andropov’s death led to a stunning confrontation with the CIA and a false accusation – disproven in court – that threatened his reputation and career.
Through this deeply personal story, “The Inconvenient Journalist” provides a timely lesson on the risks and personal costs of reporting the truth and why a free press is more vital than ever.
Branson will be joined in conversation by Robert Lieber, Emeritus Professor of Government and International Affairs at Georgetown University. Professor Lieber is the author or editor of eighteen books on international relations and U.S. foreign policy, including his most recent book, Indispensable Nation: American Foreign Policy in a Turbulent World.
Following the interview, copies of Branson’s book will be available for sale and signing.
