J-Talks Presents: “First Family: George Washington’s Heirs and the Making of America”

Wednesday, February 18 @ 7:00 pm 8:15 pm

Featuring: Dr. Cassandra A. Good, author and historian
Ages: 16+
In celebration of President’s Day, learn the fascinating and little-known story of the children George and Martha Washington raised. Dr. Good will share insights from her book which chronicles George Washington’s step-grandchildren, the Custises, all of whom lived in Northern Virginia and DC.

The Custis siblings achieved fame as the nation’s first “first family.” Their story – long overlooked – parallels America’s story in its first century: military triumph and tragedy; democracy and old aristocratic ties; visions of liberty alongside slavery.

The book was named a finalist for the 2024 George Washington Prize. Books will be available for sale at a discounted rate and for author signing.

Fee: Complimentary for all. Donations to JCC Adult Programming are appreciated

Author’s Bio: Cassandra Good is Associate Professor of History at Marymount University. She received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and is the author of books, articles, and audio courses for both academic and public audiences. Her research has been supported by the Smithsonian Institution, the National Endowment for the Humanities, and the George Washington Library at Mount Vernon.
