The Yoms
(The Days) 2026

Celebrate. Commemorate. Connect. B’yachad (Together).

The Yoms are Israel’s national holidays, Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day), Yom HaZikaron (Israel’s Memorial Day), and Yom HaAtzmaut (Israel’s Independence Day). This is a time when we join Israel in a collective experience of national pride and joy, while also solemnly remembering the sacrifices made to secure a Jewish state and the enduring freedom of our people.

This year, we are excited to host several community events at the Pozez JCC and around Northern Virginia. Browse the event descriptions below, find what resonates with you, and join us for meaningful experiences marking the holidays.

Sunday, April 12, 1pm in Fairfax, VA

Yom HaShoah – Community Observance & Author Talk

Temple Rodef Shalom Rabbi Amy Schwartzman and Cantor Michael Shochet will lead a brief observance of remembrance. Following our observance, children’s author, Maya Cohen, will share her insights into children’s literature about the Shoah and tell us about her book, The Photographer’s Son.

Tuesday, April 14, 7pm in Fairfax, VA

J-Talks presents: “Pass the Trauma, Please” with local author Todd Diamond

Diamond writes an atypical viewpoint that demonstrates how trauma affects future generations of descendants (and others). His premise is derived from a scientific NYC hospital paper that found genetic changes in children of Holocaust survivors who survived the horrors of the Shoah. Diamond’s memoir uniquely links this past tragedy to present day (post-October 7th) global antisemitism.

Sunday, April 19, 12pm - 4pm in Fairfax, VA

Remembering the Holocaust: “Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezin”

A dramatic documentary film featuring Verdi’s Requiem and testimony by Terezin survivors tells the story of the courageous Jewish prisoners in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp during World War II. The musicians endured hardships, including starvation and deplorable living conditions. They were drawn from all over Europe and formed an orchestra in the basement of the concentration camp, performing Verdi’s Requiem for the prisoners, the international Red Cross and Nazi officers.
