Remembering the Holocaust: “Defiant Requiem: Verdi at Terezin”
Wednesday, April 22 @ 1:30 pm – 2:45 pm
In Collaboration with Greenspring Village Senior Living Community’s Jewish Study Hour
Location: Greenspring Village HC Chapel, 7420 Spring Village Dr., Springfield
A dramatic documentary film featuring Verdi’s Requiem and testimony by Terezin survivors tells the story of the courageous Jewish prisoners in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp during World War II. The musicians endured hardships, including starvation and deplorable living conditions. They were drawn from all over Europe and formed an orchestra in the basement of the concentration camp, performing Verdi’s Requiem for the prisoners, the international Red Cross and Nazi officers. The film is a testimony to their spirit of resistance and determination to survive. Conductor Rafael Schachter told the choir, “We will sing to the Nazis what we cannot say to them.”
Join us for a special film screening and Q&A by a Defiant Requiem Foundation staff member.
Fee: Complimentary. Registration required. Donations to the J’s Adult Services Program are greatly appreciated.
