Navigating the Road Ahead: Senior Driving and Uber

Friday, May 3 @ 2:00 pm 3:00 pm

Older drivers, start your engines! Join us for a workshop on how to successfully get around the DMV/Northern Virginia by car. First hear from Mike Perel, retired, U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Braddock District representative on the Fairfax Area Commission on Aging. Mike will discuss how you can stay safe behind the wheel as an older driver. During all the years that you have been driving, traffic has changed, cars have changed, and YOU have changed. What do these changes portend for driving safety? This informative presentation will focus on the myth of the unsafe older driver, how aging might affect driving performance, what drivers can do to stay safe, and how new automobile technologies can help us avoid crashes and reduce injuries.

Next, hear a presentation from Terri Lamb, Program Outreach Manager and Travel Trainer from DATA. She will share how to use ride applications like Uber or Lyft. These ride programs are a very valuable tool for those who are unable to drive and need to get somewhere local. They are very easy to use if you have a portable smart device (cell phone or tablet) and a credit card! Bring your smart device to the workshop and get hands-on assistance learning how to use the application after the presentation from volunteers!
