SUMMARY:J-Talks & the J-Men’s Group present…A Place Called Ilda: Race and Resilience at a Northern Virginia Crossroads
DESCRIPTION:Featuring author Tom Shoop\, writer\, editor\, historian and recovering journalist \n\n\n\nDid you ever wonder about the history of the land on which the Pozez JCC now sits? It is more fascinating and significant than you might realize. This spot was once the center of a racially integrated\, and now largely forgotten\, community known as Ilda. The village was established after the Civil War by two Black entrepreneurs and their families\, who provided the economic engine for its initial success—a blacksmith shop. Ilda flourished as a racially integrated community before the Jim Crow era. “A Place Called Ilda” weaves together accounts of horse thievery\, attempted murder\, savage beatings\, hate crimes\, and a long-forgotten cemetery. This gripping and often moving narrative provides a rich and unusually detailed record of the rise\, decline\, and rediscovery of a crossroads whose secrets and mysteries depict an America that might have been — and might still be. \n\n\n\nTom Shoop will give a brief presentation about the book and his research\, with Q&A to follow. A book sale and signing will take place after the presentation.Fee: Complimentary\, however registration is greatly appreciated.

SUMMARY:Navigating the Road Ahead: Senior Driving and Uber
DESCRIPTION:Older drivers\, start your engines! Join us for a workshop on how to successfully get around the DMV/Northern Virginia by car. First hear from Mike Perel\, retired\, U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Braddock District representative on the Fairfax Area Commission on Aging. Mike will discuss how you can stay safe behind the wheel as an older driver. During all the years that you have been driving\, traffic has changed\, cars have changed\, and YOU have changed. What do these changes portend for driving safety? This informative presentation will focus on the myth of the unsafe older driver\, how aging might affect driving performance\, what drivers can do to stay safe\, and how new automobile technologies can help us avoid crashes and reduce injuries. \n\n\n\nNext\, hear a presentation from Terri Lamb\, Program Outreach Manager and Travel Trainer from DATA. She will share how to use ride applications like Uber or Lyft. These ride programs are a very valuable tool for those who are unable to drive and need to get somewhere local. They are very easy to use if you have a portable smart device (cell phone or tablet) and a credit card! Bring your smart device to the workshop and get hands-on assistance learning how to use the application after the presentation from volunteers! \n\n\n\nAges 60+ \n\n\n\nIn Partnership with DATA (Dulles Area Transportation Association)

SUMMARY:Pozez JCC & American Red Cross Blood Drive
DESCRIPTION:The Pozez JCC has hosted several blood drives to help our County replenish its critically low supply. Every day\, blood donors help patients of all ages: accident and burn victims\, heart surgery and organ transplant patients\, and those battling cancer. In fact\, every two seconds\, someone in the U.S. needs blood. It is likely that you or someone you know will need a blood transfusion in your lifetime. Last year\, drives hosted by the Pozez JCC collected 113 units of blood. Our goal this year is to collect more than 125 units of blood and you can help meet our goal! \n\n\n\nThe blood donation process from the time you arrive until the time you leave takes about an hour. The donation itself is only about 8-10 minutes on average.
