SUMMARY:J-Talks presents...Gitel’s Story: The Inarticulate Speaks
DESCRIPTION:Featuring Howard Bass\, interviewed by author and contributing editor to The Atlantic\, Burt Solomon \n\n\n\n“Gitel’s Story” is a memoir of a Jewish woman’s journey from the Russian Empire to America\, written by her daughter and transcribed and edited by her great nephew. It is a first-hand account which channels the voice of Gitel Goldstein Sbarow. The story begins in the town of Savran\, Ukraine\, where Gitel was born in 1869\, and ends in Cleveland\, Ohio\, in 1941. Gitel endured the 1905 Odessa pogrom\, the death of her 2-year-old daughter en route to America in 1906\, and the premature death of her beloved husband\, Reuben\, three years later. In Indianapolis\, IN\, she raised five children while operating a grocery store and later a boardinghouse before moving to Cleveland in 1915 to be closer to her descendants. \n\n\n\nWhile this story is far from unique—many early 20th century immigrants’ lives followed a similar pattern—Clara Wollin’s documentation of her family’s experiences is a rare first-person account of the immigrant experience. Shortly after the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022\, Howard Bass brought the languishing memoir to life\, enhancing it with family photos\, documents\, family trees\, and additional relevant images from the Russian Empire and the New World. A book sale and signing will take place post-presentation and Q&A. \n\n\n\nThis is a story that will resonate with many – those whose roots come from the Pale of Settlement and those who are following the devastating war in Ukraine. \n\n\n\nAges 18+

SUMMARY:Jimbo Jay: Music\, Humor and Life in the Gaza Envelope
DESCRIPTION:Doors open\, wine\, and light appetizers – 7:30pm \n\n\n\nPerformance – 8pm \n\n\n\nJimbo Jay\, Omar Havron\, is a versatile artist\, blending rap\, singing\, and poetry to capture the essence of Israeli culture. His music has resonated with households across Israel\, reflecting his love for Hebrew\, humor\, and a deep connection to the country\, particularly the Gaza envelope where he resides. Through his artistry\, Jimbo addresses pressing issues with sincerity\, turning them into uplifting and emotionally resonant songs.During the Hamas attack on Israel on October 7th\, Jimbo found himself at home with his wife and two daughters. They spent 10 harrowing hours in a bomb shelter before safely escaping the affected area. This traumatic experience deeply impacted Jimbo\, echoing the sentiments felt by the entire nation of Israel. Subsequently\, it infused many of his songs with newfound depth and perspective\, shedding light on the resilience and solidarity of the Israeli people. We are privileged to have him here\, in Northern Virginia\, for a conversation and a performance about his art and himself. \n\n\n\nListen to Jimbo Jay’s music on YouTube here and stream on Spotify here.

SUMMARY:Zochrim: Community Commemoration for Yom Ha’Zikaron
DESCRIPTION:Yom Ha’Zikaron\, Israel’s Memorial Day\, carries a heavier weight this year as we grapple with the loss of countless individuals and the pain felt by their families. It’s a solemn occasion to honor their memory\, acknowledge the grief of those left behind\, and find solace in our collective mourning. We invite the community to join us for a communal commemoration ceremony\, where we can come together to remember the fallen\, express gratitude for their sacrifice\, and seek hope amidst the sorrow. All events happening this evening are a combined effort of many Northern Virginia Jewish organizations. You can choose to come to the Ceremony at the J or join your local watch parties to connect with people in the community nearby (list will be updated below).  \n\n\n\nEvents Schedule: 7:00-8:15 pm – The ceremony at the J will be broadcast to the watch parties. 8:30-9:30 pm – Break out groups for smaller discussions at the J and the hosting congregations.  Following the commemoration\, we will gather in smaller groups for a more intimate gathering\, providing an opportunity to express our pain and unite as a community through “singing in their memory.” This will allow us to honor the fallen by sharing songs written by those who are no longer with us\, fostering connection and remembrance through music.   The Pozez JCC of Northern Virginia initiated this series of events in partnership with The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington\, Friends of the IDF\, JCRC\, Gesher Jewish Day School\, The Israel Embassy to the United States\, Temple Rodef Shalom\, Congregation Etz Hayim\, Congregation Sha’are Shalom\, and Beth El Hebrew Congregation.   Proudly supported by the Israel Engagement Fund: A JCC Association of North America Program Accelerator and the Ministry of Diaspora Affairs.

SUMMARY:J-Talks & the J-Men’s Group present…A Place Called Ilda: Race and Resilience at a Northern Virginia Crossroads
DESCRIPTION:Featuring author Tom Shoop\, writer\, editor\, historian and recovering journalist \n\n\n\nDid you ever wonder about the history of the land on which the Pozez JCC now sits? It is more fascinating and significant than you might realize. This spot was once the center of a racially integrated\, and now largely forgotten\, community known as Ilda. The village was established after the Civil War by two Black entrepreneurs and their families\, who provided the economic engine for its initial success—a blacksmith shop. Ilda flourished as a racially integrated community before the Jim Crow era. “A Place Called Ilda” weaves together accounts of horse thievery\, attempted murder\, savage beatings\, hate crimes\, and a long-forgotten cemetery. This gripping and often moving narrative provides a rich and unusually detailed record of the rise\, decline\, and rediscovery of a crossroads whose secrets and mysteries depict an America that might have been — and might still be. \n\n\n\nTom Shoop will give a brief presentation about the book and his research\, with Q&A to follow. A book sale and signing will take place after the presentation.Fee: Complimentary\, however registration is greatly appreciated.
