SUMMARY:JxJ Best of Fest - "Blind at Heart"
DESCRIPTION:The Pozez JCC\, in partnership with Edlavitch DCJCC\, is thrilled to present JxJ BEST OF FEST: Monthly Film Screenings at Cinema Arts Theatre in Fairfax! \n\n\n\nEnjoy 5 feature length and 6 short Jewish or Israeli films over a 6-month period here in our area! \n\n\n\n“Blind at Heart”Dir. Barbara Albert | 2024 | Germany/Switzerland | 136 min.A magnetic Mala Emde portrays Hélène\, an aspiring doctor who tries to hide her Jewish identity after arriving in Weimar-era Berlin as a young woman. Over the subsequent decades\, Hélène finds her career ambitions and romantic expectations transformed as she begins to witness the frightening rise of Nazism\, ultimately leading her to drastic decisions that will forever change her sense of self and make her question the very idea of personal independence. With an assured sense of dramatic motion\, Barbara Albert adapts Julia Franck’s internationally renowned\, German Book Prize-winning novel\, “Die Mittagsfrau (The Blindness of the Heart)\,” into an exacting moral tale about the difficult choices people make during times of tumult\, spanning the late 1920s to the darkest days of World War II. Note: some images may be disturbing; contains a depiction of sexual assault. \n\n\n\nTickets: $15Tickets may be purchased at the Cinema Arts Box Office or online.

SUMMARY:What Were the Words of God? (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:In Partnership with BASONOVA*Featuring Donald Kane\, BASONOVA PresidentMoses wrote down everything the Lord had said (Exodus 24:4)Then the Lord reached out his hand and touched my mouth and said to me\, “I have put my words in your mouth” (Jeremiah 1:9)Does the Hebrew Bible contain the immutable words of God? Did the prophets speak the words of God? Might there be older versions of our sacred writings we can point to that add or subtract from the text or\, in some cases\, demonstrate different theological meanings? \n\n\n\nThis illustrated lecture will highlight differences between what is called the “Masoretic” Bible Jews use today\, the Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible known as the Septuagint\, sacred texts recovered from among the Dead Sea Scrolls\, and the Pentateuch used by Israel’s Samaritans. The presentation will also put into context how the ancestors of today’s Jews apprehended the sacred writings that were pluriform in their time\, as well as examine the role scribes played in reproducing\, harmonizing and changing these texts\, and preserving Revelation.Speaker Bio: Donald Kane is one of the well-known faces of biblical archaeology in the Washington\, D.C. area. He is President of *BASONOVA\, the Biblical Archaeology Society of Northern Virginia\, and Chair of the Rockville-based Biblical Archaeology Forum (BAF). Both these charitable organizations hold in-person and Zoom presentations on the worlds of the Ancient Near East and Eastern Mediterranean.Donald is a veteran of many excavation seasons in Israel\, sits on the Executive Committee of the Jerusalem-based W.F. Albright Institute of Archaeological Research\, and is a trustee of CAORC (Council of Overseas Research Centers).Fee: $15 members; $20 Non-members

SUMMARY:JxJ Best of Fest - "The True Story of Tamara De Lempicka & the Art of Survival"
\n\n\n\n“The True Story of Tamara De Lempicka & the Art of Survival”Dir. Julie Rubio | 2024 | United States | 96 min.All women’s groups (Sisterhoods\, NCJW\, Hadassah\, Brandeis Women\, book clubs\, etc.) are invited to attend this matinee screening about an infamous Jewish female painter in Paris in the 1920s. \n\n\n\nA visually stunning and sweeping documentary that traces the life and survival of the renowned painter through her powerful paintings – from her rise to international stardom in 1920s Paris\, to her move to the United States in 1940\, fleeing the rise of fascism\, and her revival in the current art market. \n\n\n\nTamara de Lempicka was the preeminent Art Deco painter\, known for her high-gloss sensual nudes and portraits of high society during the Jazz Age. She was marginalized and gained notoriety for her romantic liaisons with her models and her indulgent\, decadent lifestyle\, but she was so much more. The film follows this remarkable émigrée as she reinvents herself multiple times\, looking behind the veneer of the publicity she generated for herself and examining the bisexual Jewish artist who embodied talent\, resilience\, passion\, and the relentless pursuit of artistic freedom. Told through her never-before-seen 8mm home movies and groundbreaking newly discovered birth and baptism certificates\, our film reveals her true name\, heritage\, and identity for the first time and will change art history. \n\n\n\nTickets: $15Tickets may be purchased at the Cinema Arts Box Office or online.
