This is a great opportunity to connect musically to the Jewish tradition. DESCRIPTION:Fertility challenges can feel completely all-encompassing as your daily life is filled with doctor appointments\, shots\, medication\, hormonal fluctuations\, career impact\, and/or a variety of other challenges. Coping with the constant triggers of life events like baby showers\, birth announcements\, getting your period\, social media\, or even someone pushing a stroller down the street can be challenging. \n\n\n\nAli Weisbrot\, LICSW will focus on the importance of finding space for yourself and your mental health while you are on your reproductive journey.  She will discuss proactive strategies for supporting your wellbeing.  Ali is a clinical social worker born and raised in the DC area with a passion for supporting women and families with the ups and downs that occur on the way to and through parenthood. Ali supports clients struggling with the uncertainty of fertility\, pregnancy\, postpartum and other parenting challenges. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, Aviva Janus\, Jewish Fertility Foundation (JFF)-Greater DC Manager\, will share how JFF can support you\, or those you love\, on a fertility journey. JFF provides emotional support and educational support for anyone seeking to grow their family. JFF also gives financial assistance in the form of grants for people in the Jewish community. DESCRIPTION:The Third Annual Distinguished Lecture in Judaic Studies at George Mason University with Aaron Dorfman\, Executive Director of A More Perfect Union: The Jewish Partnership for Democracy \n\n\n\nJews have it better in America than anywhere else in the Jewish Diaspora in the last 2\,000 years\, success that’s primarily a function of this country’s long tradition of liberal democracy. America’s democratic norms and institutions — religious freedom\, the rule of law\, freedom of association\, and others — have created an enabling environment in which Jewish life has thrived. Join us for our fall kick-off event and experience a unique timeline of American history. \n\n\n\nSpeaker Bio: A long-time White House correspondent\, Peter Maer covered the beat from 1986 until his 2015 retirement from CBS News. Maer was a voice for national news for nearly 40 years. He covered presidential politics\, and major national and international disasters with honors including the prestigious Edward R. Murrow Award\, five Merriman Smith Awards for Presidential Coverage and the Overseas Press Award. He is the recipient of the Interfaith Alliance Walter Cronkite Faith and Freedom Award. SUMMARY:Kayaking on the Occoquan River
DESCRIPTION:Hear the birds singing and take in the historic Occoquan scenery on a kayak paddle led by ACA certified paddling instructor and NOVA Parks Roving Naturalist\, Matt Felperin. \n\n\n\nExpect to observe songbirds\, Great Blue Herons\, Cormorants\, Osprey\, and maybe even some Bald Eagles! We will begin with a brief paddling instruction overview before heading out. Be sure to bring plenty of water and appropriate clothing; quick dry material is recommended along with close-toed sandals. Hats and sunscreen should be worn as well. Dry bags are recommended for personal items. \n\n\n\nJoin us afterwards for a waterfront dining experience at Brickmakers Café for a casual lunch of fresh\, local favorites around noon (at your own cost). The menu features a variety of grilled items\, including burgers\, hot dogs\, salads and more! Named for the brick kilns that used to line the riverbank\, these beehive brick kilns produced the bricks used to build many of the structures in Washington\, D.C. One beehive brick kiln remains at the park\, serving as a reminder of the rich history of the area. \n\n\n\nAges: 16+Carpooling is suggested. \n\n\n\nWant to make a day of it? View the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial by the cafe and enjoy the cute\, historic town of Occoquan with all its shops and eateries. DESCRIPTION:Led by P’nina Plotkin McCabe\, Choir Director. \n\n\n\nDo you like to sing? Are you interested in singing Jewish songs? If so\, join the JCC Community Choir – Makheylah! This is a great opportunity to connect musically to the Jewish tradition. The choir is open to high schoolers\, college students\, and adults of all ages in Northern Virginia.  All singing abilities are welcome!  Our choir has something for everyone; experienced singers will receive advanced material\, singers with moderate choral or vocal background will be well-engaged\, and those who just hum a little will fit right in! \n\n\n\nOur repertoire will range from secular to religious and include synagogue music\, Yiddish theater\, folksongs\, and Israeli songs. We will sing in various languages\, too: Hebrew\, English\, Yiddish\, Ladino\, and others. The session will culminate in a short performance (tbd). Ms. McCabe led an adult choir at the JCC from 1990-1999 and then conducted a choir at Gesher from 2010-2019\, while her children attended school there. She was the choir director at Ohr Kodesh for its High Holiday Choir from 1989-2008 and directed a local klezmer band.
