Their friendship ignites their passion and purpose. Together\, as a band\, they merge their musical roots – Jewish and Afro-diasporic melodies\, grooves\, and cultures\, combining the core concepts of àse and shalom – power\, action\, unity\, and peace. Their music embodies the radical notion that people of different faiths\, races\, and beliefs can come together\, celebrate and build community. \n\n\n\nThe band’s repertoire is a mix of original compositions and arrangements that bring the message of Unity in the Community to all audiences. \n\n\n\n“Imagine Charles Mingus sitting in with a Klezmer band\, playing Gospel music set to the polyrhythmic pace of the congas and bongos. ” — Carlos Ramos\, The Rainbow Reporter \n\n\n\nTickets: $25 in advance; $35 at the door \n\n\n\nBand’s Bio: The group began in 1998 as a duo with David Chevan on the bass and Warren Byrd on piano. All one needs to be a successful player is the current year National Mah Jongg League card (2024)\, access to a Mah Jongg set\, and the willingness to learn and practice. In this course\, students will take four 2.5-hour lessons for a total of 10 hours of instruction. You will learn how to read the Mah Jongg card and identify the different tiles\, the rules of American Mah Jongg\, and the elements of play. 2024 cards can be ordered through the instructor or the NMJL for $15.
