SUMMARY:JxJ Presents: 31 Candles
DESCRIPTION:This heartwarming and hilarious romantic comedy inspired by director Jonah Feingold’s own experiences centers on Leo Kadner (played by Feingold)\, a 31-year-old New Yorker who unexpectedly decides to have his long-overdue Bar Mitzvah after a chance encounter with his former summer camp crush\, Eva Shapiro (Sarah Coffey). \n\n\n\nAs Leo navigates the ups and downs of growing up—situationships\, exes\, and the quirks of family—he embarks on a Mitzvah project that just might help him finally mature. This charming independent film delves into themes of tradition\, identity\, and the lengths one will go for a second chance at love. \n\n\n\nThis program is proudly sponsored by Rhoda and Daniel Glickman. \n\n\n\nAbout JxJ: Presented by the Edlavitch DCJCC\, JxJ encompasses the Washington Jewish Film and Music Festivals\, alongside a year-round film and music program. SUMMARY:JxJ Presents: Mazel Tov
DESCRIPTION:From acclaimed Argentinean actor and director Adrián Suar comes a heartfelt\, humorously touching tale of family\, forgiveness\, and the ties that bring us back home. When Dario Roitman returns from the U.S. to Argentina for a family wedding and Bat Mitzvah\, he anticipates the usual family drama. But his carefully laid plans for a family reunion are suddenly upended when he learns\, just hours before his flight\, that his father has passed away. As the Roitmans gather for the funeral\, old wounds resurface\, and longstanding tensions reach a boiling point. \n\n\n\nDespite the emotional turmoil\, Dario remains determined to celebrate both the wedding and Bat Mitzvah\, even if it means challenging tradition and risking further discord. Navigating grief\, sibling rivalry\, and delightfully eccentric grudges\, the Roitmans reveal the messy yet enduring love of family. \n\n\n\nThis program is proudly sponsored by the Embassy of Argentina. \n\n\n\nAbout JxJ: Presented by the Edlavitch DCJCC\, JxJ encompasses the Washington Jewish Film and Music Festivals\, alongside a year-round film and music program. SUMMARY:Echoes of Identity: French Opera and Jewish Life
DESCRIPTION:In Collaboration with Canto Vocal ProgramsFeaturing Maurice Lugassy\, professor of French culture and Canto Vocal artistsWhat can opera tell us about identity\, exile\, and belonging?Join Maurice Lugassy for a thought-provoking musical lecture that explores how Jewish stories\, composers\, and themes found a place on the grand stage of French opera. From the powerful drama of Halévy’s La Juive\, an opera of love\, faith\, and persecution\, to subtle threads of Jewish identity woven into the works of Bizet\, Saint-Saëns\, and others\, this journey uncovers how opera became a space to express both cultural pride and profound struggle.Blending history\, storytelling\, and live musical excerpts\, this lecture reveals how Jewish life shaped\, and was shaped by\, the world of French opera. Whether through bold characters\, coded messages\, or the complex lives of composers\, Jewish voices echoed through the opera houses of France — sometimes in harmony\, sometimes in conflict. The presentation will conclude with an open Q&A session. Ages 18+Fee: $15 Members; $20 Non-members (includes dessert)
