DESCRIPTION:Special Screening of “Alex’s Group” and Conversation with Director Yonatan Nir \n\n\n\nJoin Pozez JCC\, JCRC of Greater Washington\, and JSSA for a meaningful community gathering in honor of Yom HaZikaron – Israel’s Memorial Day for Fallen Soldiers and Victims of Terror. \n\n\n\nThe evening will feature a screening of the Israeli documentary “Alex’s Group\,” followed by a conversation with the film’s director\, Yonatan Nir\, together with Rabbi Rachel Hersh from JSSA. \n\n\n\nThe film follows eight Israelis from diverse backgrounds who participate in a year-long therapeutic photography group led by Israel Prize–winning photographer Alex Levac. The musicians endured hardships\, including starvation and deplorable living conditions. They were drawn from all over Europe and formed an orchestra in the basement of the concentration camp\, performing Verdi’s Requiem for the prisoners\, the international Red Cross and Nazi officers. The film is a testimony to their spirit of resistance and determination to survive. SUMMARY:The Legacy of the Ritchie Boys (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Featuring: A Panel of Ritchie Boys’ Descendants: Jim Klein\, Dr. Amanda Rothschild\, and Chris Galen\, moderatorAges 16+The “Ritchie Boys” were an organization of Army soldiers in World War II with a sizable number of German-speaking immigrants to the United States\, often Jews from Germany and Austria who escaped Nazi persecution – only to return to Europe to defeat fascist forces. \n\n\n\nDuring the program\, three descendants of the Ritchie Boys will present the unique histories of four men who served in this elite group: Bill Galen\, Kurt Klein\, Ernest Rothschild\, and Alex Sabbadini (the latter three of whom all fled Europe before the Holocaust but later played important roles in ending the war). Our panelists will take questions after the presentation. \n\n\n\nThe 22\,000 men trained at Camp Ritchie in Washington County\, Maryland\, were used primarily for interrogation of German and Italian prisoners on the front lines and counterintelligence in Europe. After the war\, many former Ritchie Boys rose to important positions in the military and in the intelligence community. In addition to interrogation and counterintelligence\, they were trained in psychological warfare\, and many later served as prosecutors and translators in the Nuremberg trials. A documentary was made about this special assemblage of soldiers and their little-known service during WWII. Today\, Fort Ritchie features a museum detailing this clandestine mission. \n\n\n\nA collection of books and memorabilia on the Ritchie Boys will be on display. A children’s book called “My Zayde is a Superhero: The True Story of an American Jewish Boy who Survived and Fought Back” by Dr. Rothschild will be available for preview. DESCRIPTION:Every day\, blood donors help patients of all ages: accident and burn victims\, heart surgery and organ transplant patients\, and those battling cancer. In fact\, every two seconds\, someone in the U.S. needs blood. It is likely that you or someone you know will need a blood transfusion in your lifetime. \n\n\n\nDonors of all blood types are critically needed\, especially those with type O blood. \n\n\n\nThe blood donation process from the time you arrive until the time you leave takes about an hour. The donation itself is only about 8-10 minutes on average. In order to qualify for whole blood donation\, you must be in good health and feeling well\, at least 16 years of age (with signed parental consent) and weigh at least 110 lbs. Additional eligibility criteria apply\, including certain medications\, medical conditions\, travel to certain countries\, and personal history. \n\n\n\nPre-registered participants only. No walk-ins. SUMMARY:Hands-On Israel: A Panel Discussion and Workshops with our Community Shlichim
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a wonderful to opportunity to meet and learn with several of our senior shlichim (Israeli Cultural Emissaries) who are serving our community through a partnership between the Jewish Federation of Greater Washington and the Jewish Agency for Israel. The Greater Washington area boasts the second large delegation of shlichim after New York City) with 12 shlichim serving congregations and Jewish organizations across the DMV. \n\n\n\nOur shlichim come from all over Israel and represent the many different cultural and religious backgrounds of Israelis bringing diverse experiences and perspectives. Their role is to help our community members make a personal and cultural connection with an Israeli and with Israel. \n\n\n\nThis program will include a panel discussion followed by three hands-on Israel workshop options led by the shlichim. The workshops will showcase their unique talents\, passions\, skills\, and backgrounds through different modalities (arts\, music\, food\, stories\, and more). \n\n\n\nDuring the panel discussion\, we will learn more about the role of being a shlicha and serving in a diaspora community\, and what it means for to work in our unique Greater Washington community in this capacity. They will share the insights\, joys\, challenges of their work and ways to (re)connect with Israel even during difficult times. \n\n\n\nHere are the 3 workshop options. Below\, you will be able to select your preferences in order and will be assigned to one in advance. \n\n\n\nOption 1: Unveiling Her: The Complex Story of Israeli Womanhood (with Chen Sara) – This workshop uses film to explore the diverse experiences of Israeli women—stories of identity\, resilience\, and everyday realities shaped by culture\, geography\, and history. Through guided clips and discussion\, participants reflect on how women navigate family\, career\, activism\, and tradition\, and consider what womanhood means to them.Option 2. The Power of Being You: Bridging Hearts Through Israel Pride (with Hila) – This workshop explores ‘coming out’ as both an LGBTQ+ experience and a universal human journey. Through a personal story and a look at LGBTQ+ life in Israel\, participants reflect on identity\, authenticity\, and self-acceptance\, discovering how openness and honesty can foster meaningful connections and community.Option 3. Shuk Haifa (with Tal) – Get to know the spiritual heart of Haifa\, the city where multiple faiths live and thrive together. Explore the unique blend of religions\, traditions\, and shared daily life through an interactive\, market-style workshop.
