All one needs to be a successful player is the current year National Mah Jongg League card (2025)\, access to a Mah Jongg set\, and the willingness to learn and practice. \n\n\n\nIn this course\, students will take four 2.5-hour lessons for a total of 10 hours of instruction. You will learn how to read the Mah Jongg card and identify the different tiles\, the rules of American Mah Jongg\, and the elements of play. 2025 cards can be ordered through the instructor or the NMJL for $15. DESCRIPTION:Nissimmi is a chef\, ordained rabbi\, international educator and speaker\, who combines his love of food and people with his commitment to building connections between culture\, Jewish identity\, and tradition.From flavorful foundations in his grandmother Miriam’s kitchen to working in some of Israel’s most renowned restaurants\, Nissimmi’s culinary journey is rooted in the traditions and flavors of the Jewish heritage\, stories and memories. His work explores the central role food plays in shaping Jewish identity\, using rich historic knowledge\, Jewish texts\, and of course\, carbs.We invite you to a cooking demonstration with Nissimmi to learn more deeply about what connects Jewish kitchens worldwide\, and to experience favorite contemporary Israeli dishes. The workshop is for ages 5 and up. Participants under age 10 require a 1:1 adult\, child care will be available for ages 2-5. \n\n\n\nChef Bio: Beyond the cutting board\, Nissimmi holds degrees in philosophy\, economics\, political science\, and law. He received his rabbinical ordination from the Hartman Institute. He serves as a Casualties Notification Officer as part of his reserves duty in the IDF\, where he has dedicated more than 200 days since October 7th. Nissimmi lives in Jerusalem with his wife\, Shlomit\, and their three daughters. He leads the Siah Yitzhak Congregation in Katamon.This program is in partnership with Congregation Olam Tikvah\, Gesher Jewish Day School & Friends of the IDF. However\, in recent years\, amid extreme polarization\, the media has come under scrutiny for how they deliver the news\, while public figures have demonized the journalism industry and stoked anger among viewers. \n\n\n\nOnce-revered journalists like Murrow\, Cronkite\, Woodward and Bernstein have been replaced in part by a new generation of news professionals who emphasize social media views and sensationalist commentary over accurate and well-sourced information. \n\n\n\nOur distinguished panel of diverse journalists will discuss how we arrived in an era where the weaponization of information has become commonplace in media and the public discourse. She played a pivotal role in identifying workable solutions to counter violent extremism\, strengthening governance and safety of Women in Africa. \n\n\n\nPriscilla believes that the key to making empowered decisions is to align our values and goals to how we “show up.” It’s what makes us better leaders\, better parents\, better partners and enables us to operate at the fullest of our potential. Priscilla worked at the Special Court for Sierra Leone in The Hague\, in the support of the trial against Charles Taylor. She acted as a Strategic Advisor to investors in emerging markets in Africa. She holds an BA from McGill University\, an MSc. in Development and Planning from University College London\, and a Law degree from the University of London (College of Law\, Guildford). \n\n\n\nPriscilla is a businesswoman\, mother\, wife\, board member and champion of Women’s empowerment. She is a certified professional coach (CPC ELI-MP) with a focus on female leaders\, and a member of the International Coach Federation (ICF). \n\n\n\nZina Segal\, Pozez JCC Sr. Director of Community Impact and Engagement\, is inspired by the J’s goal of creating multiple gates to Jewish Peoplehood for people of all kinds of identities. She holds an MA in Digital Humanities from SPb State University and an MA in Leadership in Jewish Education and Communal Service from Towson University.As a life-long learner and Jewish educator\, Zina believes in the magic of learning Jewish text together. DESCRIPTION:Advanced Beginners and those with some knowledge may join this ongoing course. Students must be comfortable with the Hebrew alphabet to learn the rudiments of reading. (Yiddish is phonetic and much easier than Hebrew). We will study Yiddish stories and converse about them in Yiddish. We’ll also learn a great deal of vocabulary and useful phrases and how to ask important questions. Jokes\, proverbs\, songs\, and even a few curse words will be included. \n\n\n\nStudents will need to log into Zoom on a device each week. All materials will be provided via email\, in Hebrew as well as in transliteration.
