DESCRIPTION:Join Samantha Mandeles and Rabbi Leila Gal Berner for a lunch & learn session to understand the history and vibrancy of the Abayudaya\, as well as the daily constraints and discrimination facing this isolated yet dedicated Jewish community. Light refreshments will be served. Participants are invited to bring their own dairy or pareve (non-meat) lunch.Fee: Complimentary \n\n\n\nVisit The Abayudaya: Portrait of an African Jewish Community in the Bodzin Gallery from August 19–October 6\, 2024. Photography by Samantha Rose Mandeles.When we think of eastern Africa today\, we usually don’t think of a concentration of Jews. But miraculously\, one such vibrant community exists! The Abayudaya\, who number about 2\,000 souls\, are concentrated in a few towns and villages in eastern Uganda and western Kenya. Devout in practice\, keeping kosher and observing Shabbat and holy days\, the Abayudaya (a word in the local language Luganda meaning “People of Judah”) have been recognized as Jews by Reform\, Reconstructionist\, Conservative and Renewal movements of Judaism. \n\n\n\nLearn more about the exhibit here.

DESCRIPTION:Hear the birds singing and take in the historic Occoquan scenery on a kayak paddle led by ACA certified paddling instructor and NOVA Parks Roving Naturalist\, Matt Felperin. \n\n\n\nExpect to observe songbirds\, Great Blue Herons\, Cormorants\, Osprey\, and maybe even some Bald Eagles! We will begin with a brief paddling instruction overview before heading out. Be sure to bring plenty of water and appropriate clothing; quick dry material is recommended along with close-toed sandals. Hats and sunscreen should be worn as well. Dry bags are recommended for personal items. \n\n\n\nJoin us afterwards for a waterfront dining experience at Brickmakers Café for a casual lunch of fresh\, local favorites around noon (at your own cost). The menu features a variety of grilled items\, including burgers\, hot dogs\, salads and more! Named for the brick kilns that used to line the riverbank\, these beehive brick kilns produced the bricks used to build many of the structures in Washington\, D.C. One beehive brick kiln remains at the park\, serving as a reminder of the rich history of the area. \n\n\n\nAges: 16+Carpooling is suggested. \n\n\n\nWant to make a day of it? View the Turning Point Suffragist Memorial by the cafe and enjoy the cute\, historic town of Occoquan with all its shops and eateries. From the chart-topping hits she wrote for the biggest acts in music to her own life-changing\, trailblazing success with Tapestry\, “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” takes you back to where it all began — and takes you on the ride of a lifetime. Winner of two Tony Awards and featuring beloved songs including “I Feel the Earth Move\,” “One Fine Day\,” “(You Make Me Feel Like) A Natural Woman\,” “You’ve Got a Friend\,” and the title song\, “Beautiful\,” she made more than beautiful music\, she wrote the soundtrack to a generation. \n\n\n\nJoin us for this Wednesday matinee performance that includes a full course lunch (served from 11:30am-12:45pm). The performance will begin at 1:30pm. Please have a hearty breakfast before arriving. We will provide a snack to be eaten on the bus after the show. \n\n\n\nNote: This trip is limited to 30 participants on a first come\, first served basis. Tickets are transferable\, but not refundable.

DESCRIPTION:Would you like to learn basic Hebrew in a small group setting? This course is designed for true beginners to the Hebrew language or those who need an extensive refresher. Over eight classes\, you will learn the alphabet including vowels\, important vocabulary\, grammar\, and common phrases and sentences/questions using a variety of resources.  \n\n\n\nEach student must purchase the textbook: Hebrew from Scratch Part 1 (available new on Amazon). The book uses quotations from all eras of Hebrew writing and has a Hebrew-English Dictionary which includes all vocabulary and grammatical terminology\, and is used in all level of classes.  \n\n\n\nWhether you are planning a future trip to Israel or just interested in learning the Hebrew language for your own knowledge\, this course will give you an excellent foundation. DESCRIPTION:Beginners and those with a little knowledge are welcome! We will review the Hebrew alphabet and learn the rudiments of reading. (Yiddish is phonetic and much easier than Hebrew). We will study a primary-grade Yiddish book and converse about it in Yiddish. We’ll also learn to say useful phrases and how to ask important questions. Jokes\, proverbs\, songs\, and even a few curse words\, will not be ignored. Study materials will be provided via email and Word documents\, in Hebrew letters as well as in transliteration.
