SUMMARY:Museum Trip to see “Star Power” at the Portrait Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a trip to the National Portrait Gallery to view the traveling exhibit of Star Power: Photographs from Hollywood’s Golden Age by George Hurrell. \n\n\n\nDuring the 1930s and early 1940s\, George Hurrell (1904–1992) reigned as Hollywood’s preeminent portrait photographer. Hired by the Publicity Department at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) when he was only twenty-five\, Hurrell advanced rapidly to become the studio’s principal portraitist. With a keen eye for artful posing\, innovative lighting effects\, and skillful retouching\, he produced timeless portraits that burnished the luster of many of the “Golden Age’s” greatest stars. Featuring more than 20 vintage photographs\, this exhibition portrays some of Golden Age Hollywood’s most memorable stars at the height of their fame\, including John Barrymore\, Jimmy Durante\, Rosalind Russell\, Spencer Tracy\, Loretta Young and many more.  \n\n\n\nThere will be time to first eat lunch at the Courtyard Café (on own) and to visit the museum’s gift shop after viewing the exhibit. Here is the link to the café menu: https://npg.si.edu/visit/courtyard-cafe. You are welcome to bring your own lunch. We will provide a simple snack and bottled water for the bus ride home. This trip is limited to 30 participants on a first come\, first served basis. Dating back to 18th century Hungary\, “The Politzer Saga” is a tale of highly accomplished doctors\, entrepreneurs and industrialists\, artists and musicians and art collectors who lived\, suffered\, and prevailed through significant events in the world around them. Today\, a permanent exhibition of the same name resides on the 3rd floor of the Rumbach Synagogue in Budapest! SUMMARY:Afternoon Trip to Capital Jewish Museum to see "I'll Have What She's Having: The Jewish Deli"
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a docent-led tour of the Capital Jewish Museum’s traveling exhibit “I’ll Have What She’s Having: The Jewish Deli.” This exhibit explores how American Jews imported traditions\, adapted culture\, and built community through the experience of food. In addition to showing how the Jewish deli forged an entirely new\, quintessentially American cuisine by combining Central and Eastern European dishes with ingredients abundantly available in the United States\, the exhibition traces the larger arc of the Jewish experience in the US during the twentieth century. For the Washington\, DC exhibition\, the Capital Jewish Museum incorporates new research and works from its collection to highlight the local Jewish community’s contributions to deli culture. Additions to the galleries include photographs\, menus\, and ephemera from local Jewish-owned delicatessens. \n\n\n\nThere will be time to eat lunch at the museum prior to our tour and visit the gift shop. If time allows\, you may explore the main museum exhibits. You are welcome to bring your own lunch or purchase a kosher deli boxed lunch from Char Bar for an additional cost of $20.00 (includes tax and delivery). Each boxed lunch comes with: a sandwich (choice of turkey\, pastrami\, chicken salad\, grilled chicken\, tuna or egg salad)\, potato chips\, fruit\, cookie\, and a bottle of water. \n\n\n\nNote: This trip is limited to 22 participants on a first come\, first served basis. Tickets are transferable\, but not refundable.  \n\n\n\nBus departs from the J at 12:30pm and returns approximately 4:30pm. \n\n\n\n$48 for exhibit & transportation only\, bring your own bag lunch or for additional $20 Boxed Lunch provided (see options while registering).
