DESCRIPTION:Learn conversational Hebrew in a small group setting. This course is designed for beginners to the Hebrew language or those who need a good refresher. Over eight sessions\, you will learn important vocabulary\, grammar\, and common phrases and sentences/questions using exercises. Each student must purchase the textbook: Hebrew from Scratch Part 1 (which can be found on Amazon for $59). The book uses quotations from all eras of Hebrew writing and has a Hebrew-English Dictionary which includes all vocabulary and grammatical terminology. SUMMARY:JCC Community Choir/Makheylah (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:If you like to sing and are interested in singing Jewish songs\, join the JCC Community Choir! This is a great opportunity to connect musically to the Jewish tradition. The choir is open to high schoolers\, college students\, and adults of all ages in Northern Virginia.  All singing abilities are welcome!  Our choir has something for everyone: experienced singers will receive advanced material\, singers with moderate choral or vocal background will be well-engaged\, and those who just hum a little will fit right in! \n\n\n\nOur repertoire ranges from secular to religious and includes synagogue music\, Yiddish theater\, folksongs\, and Israeli songs. We sing in various languages\, too: Hebrew\, English\, Yiddish\, Ladino\, and others. The session will include one or two short performances (tbd). Come – let’s sing! \n\n\n\nFees (include sheet music):  General Adult – $145; Active-Duty Military/Veterans – $120; Students: $90 \n\n\n\nDirector’s Bio: \n\n\n\nP’nina Plotkin McCabe has a bachelor in music from UCLA and a “Teudat Oman” (Artist Diploma) from the Rubin Academy of Music and Dance in Israel. Ms. McCabe led an adult choir at the JCC from 1990-1999 and then conducted a choir at Gesher from 2010-2019\, while her children attended school there. SUMMARY:Museum Trip to see “Star Power” at the Portrait Gallery
DESCRIPTION:Join us on a trip to the National Portrait Gallery to view the traveling exhibit of Star Power: Photographs from Hollywood’s Golden Age by George Hurrell. \n\n\n\nDuring the 1930s and early 1940s\, George Hurrell (1904–1992) reigned as Hollywood’s preeminent portrait photographer. Hired by the Publicity Department at Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (MGM) when he was only twenty-five\, Hurrell advanced rapidly to become the studio’s principal portraitist. With a keen eye for artful posing\, innovative lighting effects\, and skillful retouching\, he produced timeless portraits that burnished the luster of many of the “Golden Age’s” greatest stars. Featuring more than 20 vintage photographs\, this exhibition portrays some of Golden Age Hollywood’s most memorable stars at the height of their fame\, including John Barrymore\, Jimmy Durante\, Rosalind Russell\, Spencer Tracy\, Loretta Young and many more.  \n\n\n\nThere will be time to first eat lunch at the Courtyard Café (on own) and to visit the museum’s gift shop after viewing the exhibit. Here is the link to the café menu: https://npg.si.edu/visit/courtyard-cafe. You are welcome to bring your own lunch. We will provide a simple snack and bottled water for the bus ride home. This trip is limited to 30 participants on a first come\, first served basis. Dating back to 18th century Hungary\, “The Politzer Saga” is a tale of highly accomplished doctors\, entrepreneurs and industrialists\, artists and musicians and art collectors who lived\, suffered\, and prevailed through significant events in the world around them. Today\, a permanent exhibition of the same name resides on the 3rd floor of the Rumbach Synagogue in Budapest!
