SUMMARY:JCC Community Choir/Makheylah (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:If you like to sing and are interested in singing Jewish songs\, join the JCC Community Choir! This is a great opportunity to connect musically to the Jewish tradition. The choir is open to high schoolers\, college students\, and adults of all ages in Northern Virginia.  All singing abilities are welcome!  Our choir has something for everyone: experienced singers will receive advanced material\, singers with moderate choral or vocal background will be well-engaged\, and those who just hum a little will fit right in! \n\n\n\nOur repertoire ranges from secular to religious and includes synagogue music\, Yiddish theater\, folksongs\, and Israeli songs. We sing in various languages\, too: Hebrew\, English\, Yiddish\, Ladino\, and others. The session will include one or two short performances (tbd). Come – let’s sing! \n\n\n\nFees (include sheet music):  General Adult – $145; Active-Duty Military/Veterans – $120; Students: $90 \n\n\n\nDirector’s Bio: \n\n\n\nP’nina Plotkin McCabe has a bachelor in music from UCLA and a “Teudat Oman” (Artist Diploma) from the Rubin Academy of Music and Dance in Israel. Ms. McCabe led an adult choir at the JCC from 1990-1999 and then conducted a choir at Gesher from 2010-2019\, while her children attended school there. DESCRIPTION:If you like to sing and are interested in singing Jewish songs\, join the JCC Community Choir! This is a great opportunity to connect musically to the Jewish tradition. DESCRIPTION:*This event is currently sold out. Click the tickets link to join the waitlist.* Join us on a trip to the newly renovated National Museum of Women in the Arts downtown for a private\, docent-led tour. The topic will be “New Worlds: Women to Watch 2024.” This exhibition features works by 28 visionary artists that reimagine the past\, present alternate realities\, and inspire audiences to create different futures. \n\n\n\nWe will have time to peruse the museum’s gift shop. The café is expected to be open in late May\, but it is not guaranteed\, so we recommend having a hearty breakfast before arriving and bringing a dairy or pareve lunch to be eaten at the museum before the tour. A light snack and bottled water will be provided for the bus ride. \n\n\n\nFollowing the visit\, time-permitting\, we will head home after making a stop at the fabulous Jake’s Ice Cream in Falls Church (ice cream not included in trip fee). This scoop shop employs a staff of differently abled adults who are dedicated to serving up 28 flavors of small-batch ice cream made on site! SUMMARY:Yiddish 1: A Taste of Yiddish Continued – Spring Session (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Beginners and those with a little knowledge are welcome!  We will review the Hebrew alphabet and learn the rudiments of reading. (Yiddish is phonetic and much easier than Hebrew). We will study a primary-grade Yiddish book and converse about it in Yiddish. We’ll also learn to say useful phrases and how to ask important questions   Jokes\, proverbs\, songs\, and even a few curse words\, will not be ignored. Study materials will be provided via email and Word documents\, in Hebrew letters as well as in transliteration. Learn this hybrid language used by our ancestors\, that has become quite popular today! \n\n\n\nThursdays\, April 11-May 30 (8 weeks) \n\n\n\nInstructor: Norman Buder \n\n\n\nAges: 18+
