SUMMARY:Yiddish 1: A Taste of Yiddish Continued – Fall 2024 Session (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Beginners and those with a little knowledge are welcome! We will review the Hebrew alphabet and learn the rudiments of reading. (Yiddish is phonetic and much easier than Hebrew). We will study a primary-grade Yiddish book and converse about it in Yiddish. We’ll also learn to say useful phrases and how to ask important questions. Jokes\, proverbs\, songs\, and even a few curse words\, will not be ignored. Study materials will be provided via email and Word documents\, in Hebrew letters as well as in transliteration. DESCRIPTION:Join J-Family Ambassador Brie for a fun\, hands-on workshop where children can learn about the Jewish tradition of wearing a tallit (prayer shawl) while creating their own! Kids will design their tallit with color and decorations and learn how to tie the tzitzit (fringes). This outdoor activity is perfect for kids who love to be creative and want to connect with Jewish traditions in a playful\, engaging way. All materials are provided\, so just bring your imagination\, and enjoy a fun day in the park! \n\n\n\nBest for 2–5-year-olds\, all ages welcome \n\n\n\nProgram location provided upon registration.

SUMMARY:JCC Community Choir /Makheylah - Fall Semester (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Oct 10 session is cancelled due to illness. \n\n\n\nLed by P’nina Plotkin McCabe\, Choir Director. \n\n\n\nDo you like to sing? Are you interested in singing Jewish songs? If so\, join the JCC Community Choir – Makheylah! This is a great opportunity to connect musically to the Jewish tradition. The choir is open to high schoolers\, college students\, and adults of all ages in Northern Virginia.  All singing abilities are welcome!  Our choir has something for everyone; experienced singers will receive advanced material\, singers with moderate choral or vocal background will be well-engaged\, and those who just hum a little will fit right in! \n\n\n\nOur repertoire will range from secular to religious and include synagogue music\, Yiddish theater\, folksongs\, and Israeli songs. We will sing in various languages\, too: Hebrew\, English\, Yiddish\, Ladino\, and others. The session will culminate in a short performance (tbd). Ms. McCabe led an adult choir at the JCC from 1990-1999 and then conducted a choir at Gesher from 2010-2019\, while her children attended school there. She was the choir director at Ohr Kodesh for its High Holiday Choir from 1989-2008 and directed a local klezmer band.
