SUMMARY:Yiddish 1: A Taste of Yiddish Continued – Fall 2024 Session (Virtual)
DESCRIPTION:Beginners and those with a little knowledge are welcome! We will review the Hebrew alphabet and learn the rudiments of reading. (Yiddish is phonetic and much easier than Hebrew). We will study a primary-grade Yiddish book and converse about it in Yiddish. We’ll also learn to say useful phrases and how to ask important questions. Jokes\, proverbs\, songs\, and even a few curse words\, will not be ignored. Study materials will be provided via email and Word documents\, in Hebrew letters as well as in transliteration. SUMMARY:Infertility and Mental Health Workshop: Protecting your Mental Health and Wellbeing on your Reproductive Journey
DESCRIPTION:Fertility challenges can feel completely all-encompassing as your daily life is filled with doctor appointments\, shots\, medication\, hormonal fluctuations\, career impact\, and/or a variety of other challenges. Coping with the constant triggers of life events like baby showers\, birth announcements\, getting your period\, social media\, or even someone pushing a stroller down the street can be challenging. \n\n\n\nAli Weisbrot\, LICSW will focus on the importance of finding space for yourself and your mental health while you are on your reproductive journey.  She will discuss proactive strategies for supporting your wellbeing.  Ali is a clinical social worker born and raised in the DC area with a passion for supporting women and families with the ups and downs that occur on the way to and through parenthood. Ali supports clients struggling with the uncertainty of fertility\, pregnancy\, postpartum and other parenting challenges. \n\n\n\nIn addition\, Aviva Janus\, Jewish Fertility Foundation (JFF)-Greater DC Manager\, will share how JFF can support you\, or those you love\, on a fertility journey. JFF provides emotional support and educational support for anyone seeking to grow their family. JFF also gives financial assistance in the form of grants for people in the Jewish community. JFF serves Jewish and non-Jewish people in the Greater DC metro region. SUMMARY:JCC Community Choir /Makheylah - Fall Semester (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Led by P’nina Plotkin McCabe\, Choir Director. \n\n\n\nDo you like to sing? Are you interested in singing Jewish songs? If so\, join the JCC Community Choir – Makheylah! This is a great opportunity to connect musically to the Jewish tradition. The choir is open to high schoolers\, college students\, and adults of all ages in Northern Virginia.  All singing abilities are welcome!  Our choir has something for everyone; experienced singers will receive advanced material\, singers with moderate choral or vocal background will be well-engaged\, and those who just hum a little will fit right in! \n\n\n\nOur repertoire will range from secular to religious and include synagogue music\, Yiddish theater\, folksongs\, and Israeli songs. We will sing in various languages\, too: Hebrew\, English\, Yiddish\, Ladino\, and others. The session will culminate in a short performance (tbd). Ms. McCabe led an adult choir at the JCC from 1990-1999 and then conducted a choir at Gesher from 2010-2019\, while her children attended school there. She was the choir director at Ohr Kodesh for its High Holiday Choir from 1989-2008 and directed a local klezmer band.
