DESCRIPTION:Calling all artists & art lovers! The J is excited to host museum docent Sara Shoob to present a program concentrated on works by Jewish American artists in the collection of The Smithsonian American Art Museum. Participants will explore artworks dating from the 1880’s to the present – learning about the artists’ backgrounds\, Jewish experiences\, art movements\, and contemporary issues influencing their work. Artists will include Roy Lichtenstein\, Moses and Raphael Soyer\, Chaim Gross\, Louise Nevelson\, Miriam Schapiro\, and others.  An engaging program with opportunities for personal connections\, discussion\, and questions is planned; please join us. \n\n\n\nFeaturing Sara Shoob\, SAAM Volunteer Docent \n\n\n\nAges: 18+ \n\n\n\nAdvanced registration is preferred.

Spanish is spoken in class from the first day! DESCRIPTION:Learn conversational Hebrew in a small group setting. This course is designed for beginners to the Hebrew language or those who need a good refresher. Over eight sessions\, you will learn important vocabulary\, grammar\, and common phrases and sentences/questions using exercises. Each student must purchase the textbook: Hebrew from Scratch Part 1 (which can be found on Amazon for $59). The book uses quotations from all eras of Hebrew writing and has a Hebrew-English Dictionary which includes all vocabulary and grammatical terminology. SUMMARY:JCC Community Choir/Makheylah (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:If you like to sing and are interested in singing Jewish songs\, join the JCC Community Choir! This is a great opportunity to connect musically to the Jewish tradition. The choir is open to high schoolers\, college students\, and adults of all ages in Northern Virginia.  All singing abilities are welcome!  Our choir has something for everyone: experienced singers will receive advanced material\, singers with moderate choral or vocal background will be well-engaged\, and those who just hum a little will fit right in! \n\n\n\nOur repertoire ranges from secular to religious and includes synagogue music\, Yiddish theater\, folksongs\, and Israeli songs. We sing in various languages\, too: Hebrew\, English\, Yiddish\, Ladino\, and others. The session will include one or two short performances (tbd). Come – let’s sing! \n\n\n\nFees (include sheet music):  General Adult – $145; Active-Duty Military/Veterans – $120; Students: $90 \n\n\n\nDirector’s Bio: \n\n\n\nP’nina Plotkin McCabe has a bachelor in music from UCLA and a “Teudat Oman” (Artist Diploma) from the Rubin Academy of Music and Dance in Israel. Ms. McCabe led an adult choir at the JCC from 1990-1999 and then conducted a choir at Gesher from 2010-2019\, while her children attended school there.
