SUMMARY:Double Take Israel - Marriage
DESCRIPTION:Join us for films\, stories\, and conversations that reveal Israel through cinema — complex\, emotional\, funny\, and real. A fresh way to experience Israel — watch\, talk\, and see life from new angles! \n\n\n\nIn February\, we’re diving into weddings in Israel — and everything around them — from the ceremony itself to the unique tradition of a full week of Sheva Brachot celebrations. \n\n\n\nFilm: “Seven Blessings” (2023)\, directed by Ayelet Menahemi.Summary: Marie was just two years old when her mother\, following a Moroccan Jewish tradition\, gave her to her infertile sister. Forty years later\, in 1990s Israel\, Marie returns from France to marry the love of her life\, led to the chuppah by her two “mothers.” Her lively\, loving family prepares a week of Sheva Brachot feasts in her honor — but Marie arrives carrying unresolved pain. As the food flows and the table fills\, old secrets surface\, tensions rise\, and buried truths demand to be heard. What unfolds is a bittersweet\, funny\, and deeply human story about family\, forgiveness\, and everything that was never said. \n\n\n\nPre-screening talk highlights:-What is Sheva Brachot and why does it last a whole week in Israel-How wedding traditions differ across Jewish communities in Israel-The fascinating Moroccan Jewish practice of “child lending” \n\n\n\nThis program is free. RSVP is required. We hope that you will support the Shlichut program and Israel engagement programs here.

SUMMARY:Holy Yums! Cook\, Taste\, and Share the Flavors of Israel
DESCRIPTION:Session 2 – Beit LaZayit: Olive Home Bite \n\n\n\nIn our second session\, we’re making Beit LaZayit — a warm\, comforting bite made of an olive wrapped in flaky\, golden dough. It’s the kind of small Israeli-inspired snack that is simple\, cozy\, and somehow always reminds you of home in a single bite. \n\n\n\nAs we prepare and bake\, we’ll also talk about the flavors that return us to familiar places — how a tiny bite can spark memories\, create a sense of belonging\, and remind us where “home” lives inside us\, even when we’re far away. \n\n\n\nThis program is free. RSVP is required. We hope that you will support the Shlichut program and Israel engagement programs here.

SUMMARY:J-Talks Presents: "First Family: George Washington’s Heirs and the Making of America"
DESCRIPTION:Featuring: Dr. Cassandra A. Good\, author and historianAges: 16+In celebration of President’s Day\, learn the fascinating and little-known story of the children George and Martha Washington raised. Dr. Good will share insights from her book which chronicles George Washington’s step-grandchildren\, the Custises\, all of whom lived in Northern Virginia and DC. \n\n\n\nThe Custis siblings achieved fame as the nation’s first “first family.” Their story – long overlooked – parallels America’s story in its first century: military triumph and tragedy; democracy and old aristocratic ties; visions of liberty alongside slavery. \n\n\n\nThe book was named a finalist for the 2024 George Washington Prize. Books will be available for sale at a discounted rate and for author signing. \n\n\n\nFee: Complimentary for all. Donations to JCC Adult Programming are appreciated.  \n\n\n\nAuthor’s Bio: Cassandra Good is Associate Professor of History at Marymount University. She received her PhD from the University of Pennsylvania and is the author of books\, articles\, and audio courses for both academic and public audiences. Her research has been supported by the Smithsonian Institution\, the National Endowment for the Humanities\, and the George Washington Library at Mount Vernon.
