SUMMARY:The Friday Morning Music Club Presents: Remembering Kristallnacht
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of classical music by the wonderful musicians of the Friday Morning Music Club (FMMC). FMMC has been performing in the DMV for more than 30 years\, bringing free classical music to diverse audiences. They will give a very special concert to remember the Night of Broken Glass – Kristallnacht – which took place in Germany in November 1938 and was a defining event of the Holocaust. \n\n\n\nThe program will include: \n\n\n\n\na sonata for cello and piano by composer James Simon\, who died at Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Simon was a prolific composer but much of his music was lost.\n\n\n\n\n\nselected works for solo piano by Erich Wolfgang Korngold\, a Jewish composer who immigrated to America to escape the Nazis.\n\n\n\n\n\nadditional works for cello and piano (by a different cellist)\, played on a cello that was “rescued” from the Holocaust. These will include Jewish-themed pieces by Ernest Bloch (Pieces from Jewish Life:  Prayer\, Supplication; Jewish Song) and Maurice Ravel (Deux Melodies Hebraique: Kaddish and L’Enigma Eternal).\n\n\n\n\nPlease join us for a moving concert of Jewish music in reminiscence of this fateful event. \n\n\n\nFee: Complimentary. Registration required.

SUMMARY:J-Talks: “The Boys From the Bronx” with Author Eric K. Reisman
DESCRIPTION:This program is brought to the community by Pozez JCC and its J-Men’s Group.Join us to hear this fascinating story by author Eric K. Reisman in conversation with friend and radio broadcaster\, Mark Lapidus. \n\n\n\n“The Boys from the Bronx” is the true story of 11-year-old boys from the East Bronx who started a sports club in 1938 and remained friends for a lifetime. Synthesizing information from their letters written during and after the war\, and through videotaped interviews\, Eric Reisman\, son of founding group member Bernie Reisman (a distinguished professor of Jewish Communal Services at Brandeis University)\, recounts the story of the Trojans’ brotherly love. \n\n\n\nA first-time author\, Reisman wanted to memorialize this amazing group and explore the influences that shaped their long-lasting friendships. Even if you aren’t familiar with James Monroe High School\, the Ward Theater\, Bronx River Parkway\, Wheeler & Elder Avenue\, and Hymie’s Candy Store\, you will be inspired by the power of this rare male friendship that lasted over 70 years. \n\n\n\nPlease join us for a nostalgic look at stories of brotherly love forged in times of war and peace. If you grew up in NYC\, especially the Bronx\, this presentation will surely resonate with you! Books are available on Amazon in paperback\, hardcopy\, and Kindle versions\, however\, Eric will bring copies for purchase and signing at the event. Please join us for a nostalgic look at stories of brotherly love forged in times of war and peace. \n\n\n\nFee: ComplimentaryAges 13+

SUMMARY:Resilience and Hope: An Evening of Art and Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:This evening is designed to encourage conversations about resilience and hope through an artistic lens. The program will explore Israel’s post October 7th reality through varied art forms\, helping to examine the consciousness of October 7th in a different way. Participants will be invited to experience several creative spaces to listen to the personal stories of the artists and take a closer look at how life in Israel has changed over the year. Following the sessions\, appetizers and drinks will be served.   \n\n\n\nOctober 7th\, 2023 as marked on the Jewish calendar\, is commemorated two days after Sukkot\, on the 27th day of Tishrei\, which is falling on October 27th this year. This date was established by the State of Israel to commemorate the horrific events of October 7th. \n\n\n\nProgram Schedule:5:00pm – Doors Open5:15pm-6:00pm – First Breakout Session6:15pm-7:00pm – Second Breakout Session7:00pm-8:00pm – Drinks\, Appetizers and Conversations \n\n\n\nOur evening will feature:   \n\n\n\n\nShye Klein\, a photographer and a survivor. Less than a year ago\, Shye Klien transitioned from living in Canada to making the move to Israel as he was driven by a connection to the land and its people. Shye worked as a photographer at the Nova festival on October 7th. During his presentation\, Shye will share his personal story and unpublished videos and images taken by him and his friends throughout the festival. Today Shy is an active speaker\, advocating against Antisemitism and Antizionism\, and is a shining beacon of bravery. We are lucky to have him with us for this special evening.  \n\n\n\n\n\nWrapping Memory Gallery. Wrapping Memory is an initiative by the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design in Jerusalem. This project aims to capture and commemorate the beauty of the region of the Gaza Envelope as it was before the tragic morning on October 7 and is dedicated to support the people who were harmed that day. In partnership with The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington\, we were able to bring the exhibit here. Presented by Tali Arnolf Wohlgemuth\, Israeli Senior Shlicha for the Federation.   \n\n\n\n\n\nIsraeli Music of Today. Public sentiment is best explained through music. To help understand how Israelis are feeling post-October 7th\, music will be our instrument for exploration. In this session\, we will dive into some of the latest songs released\, talk about the sentiment\, and enjoy the conversation. This session will be led by Shy Ashkenazi\, Former  Pozez JCC Shaliach and an Israeli educator at his very core.  \n\n\n\nThe Art of Conversation. Talking about Israel today feels like a delicate art. Daniel Flesch\, the founder of The Israel Educator project\, can help with that. Having served in the Israel Defense Forces\, at the United Nations\, and taught in the classroom of Israel advocacy\, he brings a unique combination of experiences and an authentic perspective. With Daniel\, we will work together on how to facilitate a conversation and feel comfortable doing so.  \n\n\n\n\nTo support the J’s efforts to bridge our community to Israel\, you can make a donation here. Suggested donation: $25 \n\n\n\nThis event is sponsored by the מתחברים | Mit-habrim | CONNECTIONS funding initiative\, a partnership between JCC Association of North America and the Israeli Government’s Ministry for Diaspora Affairs and Combating Antisemitism. And JFNA\, the Jewish Federations of North America.  Thanks to the generosity of a group of philanthropic foundations who partnered with JFNA to provide meaningful opportunities to commemorate October 7th .   This event is presented by the Pozez JCC of Northern Virginia in partnership with Agudas Achim Congregation\, Beth Chaverim Reform Congregation\, Beth El Hebrew Congregation\, Congregation Adat Reyim\, Congregation Beth Emeth\, Congregation Etz Hayim\, Congregation Olam Tikvah\, Congregation Sha’are Shalom\, Friends of the Israel Defense Forces\, Gesher Jewish Day School\, Jewish Community Relations Council\, Kol Ami Virginia Reconstructionist Jewish Community\, Northern Virginia Hebrew Congregation\, Temple Beth Torah\, Temple B’nai Shalom\, Temple Rodef Shalom\, The Jewish Federation of Greater Washington\, Edlavitch JCC\, and more.
