DESCRIPTION:Led by P’nina Plotkin McCabe\, Choir Director. \n\n\n\nDo you like to sing? Are you interested in singing Jewish songs? If so\, join the JCC Community Choir – Makheylah! This is a great opportunity to connect musically to the Jewish tradition. The choir is open to high schoolers\, college students\, and adults of all ages in Northern Virginia.  All singing abilities are welcome!  Our choir has something for everyone; experienced singers will receive advanced material\, singers with moderate choral or vocal background will be well-engaged\, and those who just hum a little will fit right in! \n\n\n\nOur repertoire will range from secular to religious and include synagogue music\, Yiddish theater\, folksongs\, and Israeli songs. She was the choir director at Ohr Kodesh for its High Holiday Choir from 1989-2008 and directed a local klezmer band.

DESCRIPTION:Led by P’nina Plotkin McCabe\, Choir Director. \n\n\n\nDo you like to sing? Are you interested in singing Jewish songs? If so\, join the JCC Community Choir – Makheylah! This is a great opportunity to connect musically to the Jewish tradition. DESCRIPTION:Would you like to learn basic Hebrew in a small group setting? This course is designed for true beginners to the Hebrew language or those who need an extensive refresher. Over eight classes\, you will learn the alphabet including vowels\, important vocabulary\, grammar\, and common phrases and sentences/questions using a variety of resources.  \n\n\n\nEach student must purchase the textbook: Hebrew from Scratch Part 1 (available new on Amazon). The book uses quotations from all eras of Hebrew writing and has a Hebrew-English Dictionary which includes all vocabulary and grammatical terminology\, and is used in all level of classes.  \n\n\n\nWhether you are planning a future trip to Israel or just interested in learning the Hebrew language for your own knowledge\, this course will give you an excellent foundation. SUMMARY:The Friday Morning Music Club Presents: Remembering Kristallnacht
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an afternoon of classical music by the wonderful musicians of the Friday Morning Music Club (FMMC). FMMC has been performing in the DMV for more than 30 years\, bringing free classical music to diverse audiences. They will give a very special concert to remember the Night of Broken Glass – Kristallnacht – which took place in Germany in November 1938 and was a defining event of the Holocaust. \n\n\n\nThe program will include: \n\n\n\n\na sonata for cello and piano by composer James Simon\, who died at Auschwitz during the Holocaust. Simon was a prolific composer but much of his music was lost.\n\n\n\n\n\nselected works for solo piano by Erich Wolfgang Korngold\, a Jewish composer who immigrated to America to escape the Nazis.\n\n\n\n\n\nadditional works for cello and piano (by a different cellist)\, played on a cello that was “rescued” from the Holocaust. These will include Jewish-themed pieces by Ernest Bloch (Pieces from Jewish Life:  Prayer\, Supplication; Jewish Song) and Maurice Ravel (Deux Melodies Hebraique: Kaddish and L’Enigma Eternal).\n\n\n\n\nPlease join us for a moving concert of Jewish music in reminiscence of this fateful event. \n\n\n\nFee: Complimentary. Reisman in conversation with friend and radio broadcaster\, Mark Lapidus. \n\n\n\n“The Boys from the Bronx” is the true story of 11-year-old boys from the East Bronx who started a sports club in 1938 and remained friends for a lifetime. Synthesizing information from their letters written during and after the war\, and through videotaped interviews\, Eric Reisman\, son of founding group member Bernie Reisman (a distinguished professor of Jewish Communal Services at Brandeis University)\, recounts the story of the Trojans’ brotherly love. \n\n\n\nA first-time author\, Reisman wanted to memorialize this amazing group and explore the influences that shaped their long-lasting friendships.
