SUMMARY:The Afro-Semitic Experience – A Special Evening of Music & Songs About Freedom
DESCRIPTION:In Honor of Black History Month \n\n\n\nFeaturing The Afro-Semitic Experience\, an American roots jazz band \n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of unique entertainment and ruach with The Afro-Semitic Experience\, a group of Jewish American and African American musicians who have been performing\, recording\, and teaching together for 25 years. Their friendship ignites their passion and purpose. Together\, as a band\, they merge their musical roots – Jewish and Afro-diasporic melodies\, grooves\, and cultures\, combining the core concepts of àse and shalom – power\, action\, unity\, and peace. Their music embodies the radical notion that people of different faiths\, races\, and beliefs can come together\, celebrate and build community. \n\n\n\nThe band’s repertoire is a mix of original compositions and arrangements that bring the message of Unity in the Community to all audiences. \n\n\n\n“Imagine Charles Mingus sitting in with a Klezmer band\, playing Gospel music set to the polyrhythmic pace of the congas and bongos. ” — Carlos Ramos\, The Rainbow Reporter \n\n\n\nTickets: $25 in advance; $35 at the door \n\n\n\nBand’s Bio: The group began in 1998 as a duo with David Chevan on the bass and Warren Byrd on piano. Over the years\, they have added many other powerful and distinctive musical voices to their mix. The current line-up includes Will Bartlett on tenor saxophone\, clarinet and flute Alvin Carter\, Jr. on drum set\, Saskia Laroo on trumpet\, and Jocelyn Pleasant on percussion. They’ve recorded eight CDs and are in the midst of composing music for their ninth.

DESCRIPTION:Featuring Trio Sefardi \n\n\n\nA Concert in Commemoration of International Holocaust Remembrance Day \n\n\n\nJoin us for a special multi-media show by Trio Sefardi. “La Nona Kanta” is a tale of survival and courage that has significant relevance in today’s turbulent world. In filmed interviews\, Flory Jagoda\, who was an active member of Northern Virginia’s Jewish community\, tells the true story of how music helped her escape from Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia when she was a teenager; how she made a life in the United States; and how she turned the tragic fate of her family and Balkan Sephardic culture into a celebration of five centuries of faith and tradition\, giving meaning to the rest of her life\, and delighting audiences worldwide. After the show there will be a short discussion/question & answer session with the audience. \n\n\n\n“La Nona Kanta” spotlights the age-old existential threat of prejudice and hatred and is a moving testament to one person’s triumph over adversity that will leave you uplifted and hopeful. \n\n\n\nAges: 12+

SUMMARY:Jewish Life in Poland Today: Old Wounds\, New Vision
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about the revival and change of attitude toward Jews in Poland today. A panel of participants in the tour will present fascinating information and answer your questions. As a special treat at the beginning of the program\, enjoy light refreshments and be entertained by Brian Ganz\, one of the best Chopin pianists in the U.S.       \n\n\n\nFeaturing: \n\n\n\nMartin Kabat\, Chair\, Kosciuszko Foundation DC Polish Film Festival\, Former Chair\, Humanities Program\, Washington College (Maryland)Brian Ganz\, widely regarded as a leading pianist of his generation \n\n\n\nPanelists:Dr. Adrian Chrobot\, Political Counsellor\, Embassy of Republic of PolandRegina Worsnop\, Biochemist\, Grad. Univ. of Wroclaw\, forced to leave Poland in 1968Tom Zier\, Assistant Dir.\, Political Outreach\, American Jewish Committee \n\n\n\nProgram summary: The Jewish relationship to Poland is still colored by memories of the Holocaust and the treatment of Jews after the war. But today\, Jewish life in Poland is thriving\, both because of efforts made by the Republic of Poland’s government and by private organizations. Perhaps surprisingly\, while we are hearing so much about antisemitism across Europe and the US\, there is now a rebirth of Jewish life and culture in Poland\, especially in the big cities of Warsaw\, Kraków and Wrocław (Breslau). Today\, when one goes to Poland\, there are extraordinary museums such as POLIN (Museum of the History of Polish Jews)\, Jewish Studies programs at major universities\, and sites and festivals celebrating Jewish culture. \n\n\n\nMartin Kabat recently participated in a “Jewish Study Tour” of Poland\, sponsored by the Polish Embassy in DC\, that included visits and interviews with leading persons and institutions working on issues related to Jewish life and culture in the republic. His presentation will address history\, antisemitism\, violence\, Polish government initiatives\, ancestry\, and citizenship.
