DESCRIPTION:*This session is postponed due to the power outage at the JCC* \n\n\n\nThursdays\, February 6-May 22 (15 rehearsals – no rehearsal Apr. 17; Mar. 13 rehearsal will be earlier in that week due to Purim) \n\n\n\nLed by P’nina Plotkin McCabe\, Choir Director \n\n\n\nDo you like to sing? Are you interested in singing Jewish songs? If so\, join the JCC Community Choir – Makheylah! This is a great opportunity to connect musically to the Jewish tradition. The choir is open to high schoolers\, college students\, and adults of all ages in Northern Virginia.  All singing abilities are welcome!  Our choir has something for everyone; experienced singers will receive advanced material\, singers with moderate choral or vocal background will be well-engaged\, and those who just hum a little will fit right in! \n\n\n\nOur repertoire ranges from secular to religious and includes synagogue music\, Yiddish theater\, folksongs\, and Israeli songs. We sing in various languages\, too: Hebrew\, English\, Yiddish\, Ladino\, and others. The session will culminate in a short performance or two (tbd). Questions? Ms. McCabe led an adult choir at the JCC from 1990-1999 and then conducted a choir at Gesher from 2010-2019\, while her children attended school there. She was the choir director at Ohr Kodesh for its High Holiday Choir from 1989-2008 and directed a local klezmer band.

SUMMARY:Women’s Social Impact Group Bedroll Making
DESCRIPTION:Join this activity to create bedrolls for the unhoused in our community! By recycling and repurposing plastic bags\, we can make waterproof bedrolls that help protect sleeping bags from the cold\, wet ground and add an extra layer of cushioning for those sleeping outside or in shelters. Volunteers will help flatten and cut bags into strips\, tie strips together to make “plarn” (plastic yarn)\, and crotchet the plarn in rows. No experience needed!

DESCRIPTION:In Honor of Black History Month \n\n\n\nFeaturing The Afro-Semitic Experience\, an American roots jazz band \n\n\n\nJoin us for an evening of unique entertainment and ruach with The Afro-Semitic Experience\, a group of Jewish American and African American musicians who have been performing\, recording\, and teaching together for 25 years. Their friendship ignites their passion and purpose. Together\, as a band\, they merge their musical roots – Jewish and Afro-diasporic melodies\, grooves\, and cultures\, combining the core concepts of àse and shalom – power\, action\, unity\, and peace. Their music embodies the radical notion that people of different faiths\, races\, and beliefs can come together\, celebrate and build community. \n\n\n\nThe band’s repertoire is a mix of original compositions and arrangements that bring the message of Unity in the Community to all audiences. \n\n\n\n“Imagine Charles Mingus sitting in with a Klezmer band\, playing Gospel music set to the polyrhythmic pace of the congas and bongos. ” — Carlos Ramos\, The Rainbow Reporter \n\n\n\nTickets: $25 in advance; $35 at the door \n\n\n\nBand’s Bio: The group began in 1998 as a duo with David Chevan on the bass and Warren Byrd on piano. Over the years\, they have added many other powerful and distinctive musical voices to their mix. The current line-up includes Will Bartlett on tenor saxophone\, clarinet and flute Alvin Carter\, Jr. on drum set\, Saskia Laroo on trumpet\, and Jocelyn Pleasant on percussion. They’ve recorded eight CDs and are in the midst of composing music for their ninth.

All one needs to be a successful player is the current year National Mah Jongg League card (2024)\, access to a Mah Jongg set\, and the willingness to learn and practice. In this course\, students will take four 2.5-hour lessons for a total of 10 hours of instruction. You will learn how to read the Mah Jongg card and identify the different tiles\, the rules of American Mah Jongg\, and the elements of play. 2024 cards can be ordered through the instructor or the NMJL for $15. This is a great opportunity to connect musically to the Jewish tradition. Between giants of the comic book industry like Jack Kirby and Joe Simon\, or Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster\, there are also Jewish characters like Ben Grimm and Magneto. How does a Jewish industry create and portray Jewish characters and superheroes? Join us as we explore the history of Jewish creators and their creations and finally answer the question: Are Spider-Man and Superman Jewish? \n\n\n\nFeaturing Sasha Kaplan\, Comic Book HistorianSasha Kaplan is a comic book historian\, Jewish representation expert\, and pop culture commentator. She holds a master’s degree in US History and educates people about Jewish history\, Jewish people\, and issues of Jewish portrayal in TV\, film\, and comics at various events\, synagogues\, and comic cons. Her work has been featured on the comic book website Comic-Watch and she has appeared on several podcasts to speak as a historian and Jewish representation analyst. A post-Soviet Jew with a strong knowledge of Jewish history and a robust Jewish identity\, Sasha brings unique insights to her academic work\, that are entertaining and informative. In filmed interviews\, Flory Jagoda\, who was an active member of Northern Virginia’s Jewish community\, tells the true story of how music helped her escape from Nazi-occupied Yugoslavia when she was a teenager; how she made a life in the United States; and how she turned the tragic fate of her family and Balkan Sephardic culture into a celebration of five centuries of faith and tradition\, giving meaning to the rest of her life\, and delighting audiences worldwide. After the show there will be a short discussion/question & answer session with the audience. \n\n\n\n“La Nona Kanta” spotlights the age-old existential threat of prejudice and hatred and is a moving testament to one person’s triumph over adversity that will leave you uplifted and hopeful. \n\n\n\nAges: 12+

Honoring the legacy of MLK\, we invite you to give back to the community\, while making new friends\, and learning together. \n\n\n\nAdults\, Teens and Tweens: Join us at 11am to participate in one of two services projects.  \n\n\n\n\nBuilding Garden Boxes for the Community Garden: Help us create beautiful\, sustainable garden boxes that will contribute to a NEW JCC community garden\, providing fresh produce to those in need. \n\n\n\n\n\nMaking Fleece Blankets for Hospice Patients: Share comfort and warmth by crafting cozy fleece blankets for hospice patients\, bringing a sense of love and care during a difficult time. \n\n\n\n\nWe will wrap the event by eating and socializing together at lunch at 12:30pm.  \n\n\n\nWhether you enjoy building things or are a craft enthusiast\, there’s a project for you to enjoy. This morning is about coming together\, making an impact\, and honoring the spirit of service. No experience necessary—just bring your enthusiasm and a willingness to contribute!

SUMMARY:Pajamuary Magic with Drew Blue Shoes
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the J for a magical morning with magician Drew Blue Shoes + Pajama Drive! \n\n\n\nPlease bring brand-new pajamas for children of all ages (including adult sizes for teens!) to donate to kids in need. The show will culminate with an opportunity to write cards for the pajama recipients and sort the pajamas for distribution. Admission includes bagels to enjoy together!  \n\n\n\nAll collected pajamas will be shared with three wonderful organizations: Yad Leah in Israel\, Lorton Community Action Center just minutes from the J\, and Sunrise on Wheels\, which provides camp-like activities in hospitals to children undergoing cancer treatment. Help us bring comfort to kids near and far this January – let’s make it a Pajamuary to remember! Fee: $24 per family (up to 5 people)\, includes show\, bagels\, and service project! $5pp for additional family members.
