SUMMARY:Film Screening "October 8th" & Unpacking It Together
DESCRIPTION:Registration for this event will close at 5:30pm on Monday\, June 16. Walk ins will not be permitted. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a screening of the film “October 8th” which explores the impact in the U.S. of the terrorist events in Israel on October 7\, 2023. Following the screening\, there will be an opportunity to join discussion circles focused on different aspects of that impact in our own community and exploring possible responses. \n\n\n\nDiscussion topics include:• How to have difficult conversations with our friends\, colleagues and neighbors about October 7th and beyond?• How can we support our students? Stories from Northern Virginia students• What can each of us do from a legislative standpoint to help with the current crisis? \n\n\n\nIf you’re interested in seeing the movie\, looking for answers to any of these questions\, or both\, please join us! \n\n\n\n“October 8th” offers a look at the explosion of antisemitism on college campuses\, social media and in the streets of America beginning the day after the October 7th attack on Israel by Hamas. Through meticulous investigation\, the film also uncovers how over decades\, Hamas created sophisticated networks in America to permeate U.S. institutions and examines the tsunami of online antisemitism\, propaganda\, and disinformation unleashed by Iran\, China and Russia – with the sole purpose of dividing American society. \n\n\n\nFee: The event is free. RSVP required. Recommended donation is $18. Make a Donation

She holds an MA in Digital Humanities from SPb State University and an MA in Leadership in Jewish Education and Communal Service from Towson University. As a life-long learner and Jewish educator\, Zina believes in the magic of learning Jewish text together. When a group of curious minds come together (with food and wine) to explore Jewish stories – phenomenal things happen: we meet ourselves\, others and Jewish heroes of the past and come up with incredible insights about our present and future!

However\, in recent years\, amid extreme polarization\, the media has come under scrutiny for how they deliver the news\, while public figures have demonized the journalism industry and stoked anger among viewers. \n\n\n\nOnce-revered journalists like Murrow\, Cronkite\, Woodward and Bernstein have been replaced in part by a new generation of news professionals who emphasize social media views and sensationalist commentary over accurate and well-sourced information. \n\n\n\nOur distinguished panel of diverse journalists will discuss how we arrived in an era where the weaponization of information has become commonplace in media and the public discourse. We’ll also assess whether the Fourth Estate can still be a beacon of truth in our deeply divided society and what can be done to regain the trust of skeptical consumers. \n\n\n\nCheck in & join us for light refreshments at 10:30am in the Community Room. \n\n\n\nAn audience Q&A will follow the panel discussion. \n\n\n\nA book sale & signing by Marvin Kalb on his 18th book\, “A Different Russia: Khrushchev and Kennedy on a Collision Course\,” will take place after the event.
