SUMMARY:From Alliance to Friendship: Blacks\, Jews and Pluralistic Peoplehood
DESCRIPTION:The Fifth Annual Distinguished Lecture in Judaic Studies with Dr. David Weinfeld of Rowan University \n\n\n\nAt the dawn of the twentieth century\, cultural pluralism\, the precursor to modern multiculturalism\, emerged out of conversations between two philosophers\, Jewish immigrant Horace Kallen and Black American Alain Locke. Kallen and Locke understood friendship itself as a metaphor for cultural pluralism. Drawing inspiration from their story\, Dr. David Weinfeld of Rowan University posits friendship as a new framework to understand and imagine Black-Jewish relations\, replacing an older model of alliance. \n\n\n\nDr. David Weinfeld is a scholar of North American Judaism and Jewish history with a focus on ideas of diversity and the intersection of religion\, race\, ethnicity\, and culture. He received his PhD in Hebrew and Judaic Studies and History from New York University. His book\, An American Friendship: Horace Kallen\, Alain Locke\, and the Development of Cultural Pluralism\, was published by Cornell University Press in 2022. This book tracks the development of the idea of cultural pluralism–the precursor to modern multiculturalism–through the friendship of the two 20th century American philosophers who came up with the term\, Jewish immigrant Horace Kallen and African American Alain Locke. \n\n\n\nJoin us for a brief lecture by Dr. David Weinfeld of Rowan University\, followed by a conversation between the guest lecturer and Dr. LaNitra Berger\, Associate Professor of History and Art History at George Mason University and Board President of the Pozez JCC. \n\n\n\nCo-sponsored by GMU Judaic Studies\, GMU African and African American Studies\, Mason Hillel\, the Pozez JCC\, and the JCRC of Greater Washington \n\n\n\nQuestions? SUMMARY:A Salute to Veterans and Holocaust Survivors (In-Person)
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we honor those who have served our country and fought for freedom and democracy. This Veterans Day\, we honor the men and women of the military whose service was part of a noble 250-year-old cause – life\, liberty and the pursuit of happiness – for all. On the heels of Kristallnacht (The Night of Broken Glass)\, we also pay tribute to those persecuted for their religious beliefs\, specifically Holocaust survivors. \n\n\n\nExperience a candid\, moving and unexpectedly funny father-and-son conversation between David Diamond (father) and Todd Diamond (son)\, author of Pass the Trauma\, Please\, an unconventional memoir that uses humor to help audiences enter the darkness of the Holocaust. In addition to uncovering extraordinary stories of survival\, loss\, resilience and family secrets\, it will explore concepts larger than the book itself: Why survivors remain silent\, why the next generation hesitates to ask\, what trauma and memory get passed between generations\, and why preserving testimony has never been more urgent. \n\n\n\nPart Holocaust history\, part incredible family story\, and part call to action\, the program asks a simple\, but important question of all of us: Who in your life still has a story you haven’t asked them to tell? \n\n\n\nFee: Complimentary to all. Light patriotic refreshments will be served. Ages 18+Donations to the Pozez JCC are greatly appreciated\, here: https://give.thej.org/campaign/735109/donate \n\n\n\nQuestions?
