The Day of Atonement
The Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur is the holiest day of the year in Judaism. Along with Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippur is often referred to as a High Holy Day. Atonement and Repentance are central themes of the holiday.
Traditionally, the holiday is observes with a day-long fast, confession, and intensive prayer, often spending most of the day in synagogue services.
Observances may include: Fasting; prayer; abstaining from physical pleasures; refraining from work; avoiding wearing leather products. The significance of the holiday includes atonement for personal sins. In addition, it is believed that the fate of each person is sealed between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur for the upcoming year.
